Community

Mark's dedication to public service is shown by his extensive volunteer and community service.

"I learned at a very young age that we all have a responsibility to give back to the community, and that one person really can make a difference."

Mark currently volunteers his time on the board of directors of the following organizations and charities:

Adoption Exchange
Clark County Public Education Foundation
CLASS! Publications Advisory Board
Kierra Harrison Foundation for Child Safety
Nevada Arts Council
Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth
Nevada Public Education Foundation
Opportunity Village

In addition, Mark is a member of the Paradise Democratic Club (past board member), Seniors United (past board member), Nevada Association of Manufactured Homeowners, Nevada Car Owners Association, Stop DUI, Clark County PAYBAC Program, the Southeast Valley Coalition of Concerned Citizens (co-founder and past board member), various parent-teach associations in District 18, the Head Start Partners Program, and the National American Notch Association. Mark is also widely recognized for his volunteer activities with the School-Community Partnership Program.

"I am always available to help a school or a community organization with a project, whether it’s donating a prize for a carnival raffle or speaking to students about their rights and responsibilities as Americans."

Mark is not afraid to roll up sleeves and pitch in when and where needed, to keep District 18 a vibrant and healthy community. When a flood devastated parts of the district, Mark helped with the sandbagging efforts, and then worked with community leaders to fast track the approval of the Duck Creek Wash. When families were evacuated from their homes during a bomb scare, Mark brought food – and candy for the kids – to the shelter. And, when Mark sees graffiti in the district, he usually grabs a can of spray paint from his car to clean it up!

Service in Action

In 1994, Mark served on the Whitney Library Building Committee, to bring the first public library to District 18.
Mark was instrumental in securing Courtney Middle School for District 18 – at the time, the first middle school in the district.
To keep District 18 beautiful, Mark championed the efforts of the Boulder Highway Beautification District.
In 1996, Mark co-founded the Southeast Coalition of Concerned Citizens, an advocacy group dedicated to resolving odor problems from sanitation facilities in District 18. The following year, he amended a bill to address these issues, thereby securing $10 million in expenditures on odor control measures.
